A little about us...

Cherry Tree has evolved over a 40 year history from a family home, to a friendly and homely Bed and Breakfast retreat in the heart of the Alston Moor, at Nenthead.  Originally a series of barns, Hellen has converted the old buildings into interconnected cottages which can sleep up to 15 people.  Home cooking is supplemented with local produce, and includes fresh eggs produced by the Cherry Tree hens. Rob keeps the building going, Pete helps with the roof in summer, and we all fiddle with the website from time to time..

It's very simple - children under 12 are £17.50, toddlers free, and us normal folks are £25 a night. We ask for a non-refundable deposit of £10 per head please. If you have any strange diets, she's no stranger to them and will do her best to help - packed lunches can be organised for a fiver each if you let her know in advance, so she has lots of ham and cheese for the sarnies! On the rare occasions you need transport, Hellen can organise a lift to Alston for you, but you'll need to line her pockets with some petrol money please!

The cottage is well known by both the C2C bike riders (The hills round here are HUGE!), and the numerous mine explorers who frequent the area throughout the year.  Some of the mine explorers have been looked after by Hellen for over 30 years, and she is familiar with many of the nearby underground workings having been underground numerous times herself. (They can be a bit wet (up to your neck), very muddy (thick gungy orange stuff), short on air at times (you can't breathe and a candle goes out), and you're sure to get lost (the main workings cover an area of nearly 15 square miles) - they're huge..!)

Cherrytree is a busy little place - there's always a constant stream of interesting folks passing through - from the bike riders, and miners - Mike, Dog Pete, Student Pete, Pete Pete, Ian, Carli the Duracell Bunny, Ike, Tony, Dave and the crew - and then there's Hellen's good musical friends Antonio and Claudio, who recorded their latest album at Cherrytree in 1998 - It's called, very appropriately 'The Cherrytree Sessions..'

If you're looking for a relaxed spot, great banter, no airs and graces - just good honest food, and a happy atmosphere - you've come to the right spot!

So.... pick the phone up and give Hellen a ring, she'd love to hear from you..!

Accommodation in Nenthead

See! It doesnt ALWAYS rain here!!! We took these photos in May, on a gorgeous day, when hundreds of weary cyclists were still attempting to crawl up Hartside Pass, and we were sitting outside having a nice mug of coffee after a relaxed breakfast. You could almost hear the screams of agony as they realised they still had to go over the top of the Northumberland boundary, which isnt as long as Hartside, but, boy is it a slog!!!! And you do it for fun...

Mind you - the day before, the boys had 'Done' the great Nenthead through trip - going in one entrance of the mine and coming out of another - 9.5km away, and 400 foot vertical drop below - after spending much of the time in flooded workings where the water is up to the roof... makes the grass look awful green, I can tell you... have a look at the mines page if you dont believe me..
